My stomach starts to rumble just thinking about the Sample Food Festival in Bangalow, an event firmly fixed on my calendar each year. If you’re planning a trip to the Northern Rivers you might like to consider coming around this time. In early September local food suppliers and restaurants serve up delicious samples of their products and culinary expertise to hungry foodies, families and friends.

Sample Food Festival - Bangalow: the e-sea life

Hugged by country surrounds and holding hands with the historic shopping street, the buzzing Bangalow showgrounds (home to weekly “Farmers” and monthly regional markets) transforms into an experience with so much colour and flavour my boyfriend and I ensure we have time off work to partake.

Sample also happens to be where we rekindled our romance so we decided on the festival’s changing date as our unofficial anniversary!

The e-sea life recommends:

  • Getting there hungry at 11:00am to eat a late brekkie. There’s ample parking which will cost around $5/person (fair, as there’s no actual entry fee)
  • Doing a lap around the main oval to scout the majority of options (we take this seriously!) then plan how to satisfy bellies’ desires giving consideration first to favourite indulgences, then restaurants not previously tried and finally how to allow space for it all!

The largest line is usually found at our first port of call JR’s Smokehouse BBQ, where pulled pork rolls are the order of the day. A locally brewed beer at the Stone and Wood stand is a must, and we can’t go past Ilias the Greek‘s baklava. Ilias is a well known local character always kitted up in traditional costume, exuding enthusiasm and generously giving away the odd desert. His baklava (which can also be found in stores) is a firm favourite at home, so much so I once received a note from my boyfriend which read “Sweetheart I ate your baklava so I bought you another one, but then I ate it”!

God love him…and Sample.
